Optical time domain reflectometer, OTDR for short, is one of the most indispensable devices in communication engineering construction and maintenance and is widely used in communication engineering.

Optical time domain reflectometer is also used in the production of optical fibers and cables, construction and acceptance, as well as the maintenance of optical cable line. It is also used by users in continuous loss monitoring, obstacles finding and line maintenance.

Technicians can view the contour of the whole system, identify and measure the span, connection points and joints of optical fibers. The trace of optical time domain reflectometer gives the position and size of the attenuation value of the system, such as the position and loss of any connector, connection point, abnormal fiber or fiber break point.

The Working Principle of Optical Time Domain Reflectometer

The testing principle of OTDR is that the laser source emits a certain intensity and wavelength of light beam to the tested fiber. Due to the traits of the fiber itself and the inhomogeneity of impurities, light propagates in the fiber and produces Rayleigh scattering.

Due to mechanical connection and fracture, fresnel reflection occurs when light is transmitted in optical fiber. Some of the scattered and reflected light are transmitted back to the input. The test is to be carried out by the optical time domain reflectometer.
