Passive Optical Network (PON) is an optical fiber network, useing point-to-multipoint topology and optical splitters to transmit data from a single transmission point to multiple user endpoints. In this case, passive refers to the unpowered state of optical fiber and independent/combined components.
In contrast to active optical networks, PON tester only needs to supply power at the sending and receiving points. From the perspective of operating costs, PON is inherently efficient. Passive optical networks are used to simultaneously transmit signals to and from user endpoints in the upstream and downstream directions.

Difference between passive and active optical networks

Both types of optical networks constitute the optical fiber backbone of the Internet. The fiber optic backbone is the basic structure of data routing, which enables people and enterprises to access the Internet.
The active optical network (AON) uses active switching equipment (such as routers) to direct signals to people. The switch is turned on and off to directly input and output signals. For telecommunications customers, this usually means that a dedicated cable is required to connect to your home.
Passive optical networks (PON) use optical splitters routing signals, which means that  the palce that signal originates and is received needs electrical equipment.

Advantage of PON

1. Relatively low cost, simple maintenance, easy to expand, easy to upgrade. The PON structure does not require power supply and electronic components during transmission.
2. The passive optical network is a pure medium network, which completely avoids the influence of electromagnetic interference and lightning, and is extremely suitable in areas with harsh natural conditions.
3. The PON system occupies little resources at the central office, the initial investment of the system is low, the expansion is easy, and the return on investment is high.
4. High bandwidth. EPON can currently provide 1.25Gb/s symmetrical upstream and downstream bandwidth.
5. A wide range of services. As a point-to-multipoint network, PON uses a sector-shaped structure to save CO resources and serve a large number of users. The way users share the central office equipment and optical fiber saves users' investment.
6. Flexible bandwidth allocation and the quality of service (QoS) is guaranteed. The G/EPON system has a complete system for bandwidth allocation and guarantee. User's Service Level Agreemen (SLA) can be achieved.

Solution of PON test

1.Total loss budget, according to the type of deployed PON power meter, carefully check each element of the network, including: splitter loss, fiber loss, etc.
2.Test link (single fiber), must measure loss and fiber attenuation to comply with supplier specifications.
3.Test Optical splitter port-loss and return loss.
4.Test end-to-end loss and return loss.
5.Open OLT and ONT.
